In Spain, Catalonia is still being run by the central government half a year after the autonomous north-eastern region declared independence unilaterally. The leading separatist leaders are either in jail or in self-imposed exile abroad. Spanish courts have charged 25 independence leaders for their role in the October independence referendum that was banned by the constitutional court.
The families of those in custody say they haven’t given up their battle for an independent republic and the independence movement is still actively protesting. They demand that their leaders are freed, describing them as “political prisoners”. Some activists want to step up their defiance against the Spanish state. But they know they could face court action if they do.
Report by Margaux Subra-Gomez, Mélina Huet, adaptation by Sarah Morris.

It’s been 50 years since the springtime riots which shook France to its core yet the struggle seems to be just as relevant today, as documentary “Mai ’68: La Belle Ouvrage” demonstrates. Film critic Lisa Nesselson tells us why the Cinémathèque’s revival of the 1969 Director’s Fortnight is worth a look and we check out cinéphile French feature “A Paris Education” and its band of young hopefuls.

This week we meet Susan Meiselas, an American documentary photographer who is currently showing her Kurdistan series at the Jeu de Paume museum here in Paris. This exhibition includes very powerful accounts of Kurds persecuted under the Saddam Hussein regime and more broadly speaking, across the region. Meiselas has been following the Kurdish cause since 1991.
We then head to Lebanon, where the first parliamentary poll in almost a decade is fast approaching. Ahead of the May 6 vote, the country has been swept up into election fever with televised debates and posters plastered on pretty much every wall available. This time, a record breaking number of women are running as candidates.
We turn our attention to Turkey, where Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to cement his grip on power since a failed coup attempt in 2016. Over the past two years, some 60,000 people have been arrested – much to the dismay of the international community and rights groups.

Israel has been trying to find a way to force between 30,000 and 40,000 African migrants to leave the country. Many of them arrived years ago, when they were minors. At the end of last year, the government said it had signed an agreement with a few African states – not those the migrants were originally from though – to send them there and that anyone who refused to go could face prison. The plan hasn’t been passed, however, and the nations named as host countries deny there was ever a deal.
Then, just a few weeks ago, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he had reached a plan with the UN that would allow half of the migrants to stay put, while the rest would be sent to other countries. Shortly afterward, however, he said the deal was scrapped. So where does that leave migrants in Israel today?

We sleep on it, eat on it and increasingly depend on it: We’re talking about plastic. When it was first discovered it was described as fantastic, but its overuse is creating a growing continent of extremely slowly dissolving waste. With a million plastic bottles sold every minute, something needs to be done. The President of Plastic Recyclers Europe, Ton Emans, explains why plastic isn’t necessarily a bad thing – as long as it is recyclable. This remains the big challenge.

In tonight’s edition: Nurses in Zimbabwe call off their strike action and return to work, and Cameroon’s government says it will compensate victims of a Ponzi scheme. Also, more and more Nigerians are taking up boxing.
Zimbabwe’s nurses have returned to work but say that pay and condition grievances that sparked last week’s walkout still stand.
And in Cameroon, victims of an alleged Ponzi scheme demand their money back. Promoters of the NGO MIDA are accused of tricking millions of CFA francs out of students who signed up hoping to be trained and collect many times their initial registration fees in supposed startup funds.
In Nigeria, having long taken a back seat in a country where football is king, more and more sport enthusiasts are willing to throw their hat into the ring and give boxing a go.

Macron meets Trump in Washington. The French president is the first to make a state visit there under the Trump administration. Some say it’s a symbol of the “bromance” betweent the two men, born at last year’s Bastille Day parade when Trump was Macron’s guest. Macron is called the Trump whisperer by some who think he has a way of getting through to Trump other leaders can only dream of. Will he get through to Trump on the thorny dossiers that the two disagree on? Iran, trade and climate change?

France is Europe’s top agricultural producer and also its top consumer of glyphosate, the most widely used herbicide in history. Each year, nearly 8,000 tons of it are used in French fields and vineyards. The chemical is cheap and effective but critics, including the World Health Organization, have sounded the alarm over its dangers.
The EU recently – and controversially – extended glyphosate’s licence in Europe for five years. France was opposed to that decision, and says it wants to ban it in the next three years. But can French farmers kick their addiction to the chemical? Down to Earth went to the fields to find out.
