Felix Tshisekedi is elected President of the Congo

Elections were held in DR Congo on December 30 after President Joseph Kabila (right inset), who has led the mineral-rich African central country since 2001, announced he would step aside. The official results handed victory to Felix Tshisekedi (left inset) by a margin of 684,000. But his nearest rival and many commentators question the validity of the result; some allege a secret deal between Kabila and Tshisekedi. Despite a heavy military presence on the streets DR Congo was mostly calm yesterday.
