Schools and medical centres have been forced to close after a major water pipe burst in south west London.

Thames Water have said they may have to hand out bottles of water if engineers can’t fix the rupture in Hampton.

Mayor of London called the shortage ‘unacceptable’ as thousands of people have been left in the dark about when they’ll get their water back.

Thames Water say water supplies have been hit in the W, TW and KT postcode areas.

Teddington Memorial Hospital’s urgent treatment centre and the Teddington Health and Social Care Centre have been closed for the day due to the outage.

Residents have been grabbing water bottles from supermarkets while they wait for updates.

Hampton Court Palace is also affected but a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk it is staying open and has ‘contingency plans’ in place.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: ‘It is unacceptable that so many people are left without water for several hours with little or no information on when supplies will be restored.

‘My team at City Hall is liaising with Thames Water, emergency services and borough officials.

‘We expect Thames Water to get a grip on this as soon as possible and to compensate all of those affected.’

Thames Water said if it is unable to resolve the issue within the next few hours, it will distribute emergency bottled water in affected areas.

It added: ‘We’re sorry to anyone whose water supply has been affected by a burst on a large pipe at our water works in Hampton.

‘A team of engineers are there investigating and we have more experts planning how to get water back on for our customers as soon as we possibly can.’

Some schools in the areas have been closed due to the disruption.
