Rescue workers shovel snow out of restaurant after avalanche

Bulgarian Red Cross workers said the skiers ignored warnings and went out on the Pirin Mountains, in the country’s southwest, on Friday morning which triggered an avalanche (bottom left). Their bodies were uncovered around midday, bringing the total killed across Europe amid a week of heavy snow to 20. Also killed on Friday was an Albanian power company worker who suffered a heart attack while repairing lines damaged by the snow. Meanwhile hotel staff were clearing up in Switzerland after a 1,000ft wall of snow slammed into the restaurant on Thursday (top and inset), leaving three people injured and burying 25 cars outside. Red warnings are in place across much of southern Europe – meaning there is a danger to life – with armed forces drafted in to help stranded communities in Germany (bottom right), Albania, Serbia and Montenegro.
